Introducing the ‘Green Lungs’ Project – A New Forest Park in Hanoi

In 2018 the ODDO architects have come up with a concept of a nature based solution for a sustainable Hanoi, which includes building a forest park in the Hanoi capital. Many partners have collaborated to make this a reality, including Keep Vietnam Clean, the Czech Embassy and the IUCN.

The idea consists of transforming one of Hanoi’s last remaining unbuilt spaces into a self-sufficient forest and biodiversity park.

The project aims to form a natural ecosystem with different varieties of animals and plants, thereby protecting biodiversity and mitigating the impacts of climate change. Additionally, the natural park is expected to help improve the quality of the living environment for people in the city, expanding the harmonious connection between people and nature.

Background of the Area

The area consists of 26 HA with a bordering population of around 840.555 in 2019. The land is mostly used for agriculture and recreation. However, some spaces have remained abandoned. The significance of this land lies in its varied habitats, and it is situated on the migratory path of various bird species.

Green Lungs Project benefits

One might think that this project would only benefit nature, however, the local economy and education can gain from this. Firstly, the forest will protect the biodiversity of the land and migratory birds in addition to climate event resilience such as heat island effect mitigation and erosion control. Secondly, locals’ health will be greatly improved due to the reduction if potential zoonotic disease and having a place to exercise and forest bathe. The local economy can experience a boom in ecotourism, which can profit the natives.
