World Cleanup Day is a global community movement dedicated to tackling the growing waste crisis. Originating in Estonia in 2008, the campaign has brought together millions of volunteers across more than 191 countries and territories, united by a shared commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable planet. Since 2024, World Cleanup Day has been officially recognized as an international day on the United Nations calendar, highlighting the international community’s commitment to changing behaviours and protecting the environment for future generations.
On September 20, Keep Vietnam Clean (KVC), in collaboration with the Phu Dien Ward People’s Committee and the Phu Dien Ward Women’s Union, organized an environmental cleanup at Phu Dien Lake and surrounding areas, bringing together volunteers, KVC partners, and local residents.
Coming Together to Keep Phu Dien’s Shared Spaces Clean
The cleanup at Phu Dien Lake brought together 35 volunteers, including KVC partners and individuals who joined KVC in the environmental cleanup. The activity was also supported by 50 members of the Phu Dien Ward Women’s Union, bringing together different groups within the local community for a shared effort.
More than simply collecting waste, the World Cleanup Day 2026 activity at Phu Dien Lake was an opportunity for the community to come together to maintain a shared space closely connected to the daily lives of local residents.
Located near the Phu Dien Martyrs’ Memorial and the Memorial Site of President Ho Chi Minh’s Visit to Kieu Mai, Phu Dien Lake is part of a local area that holds both cultural and historical significance. These sites are also closely connected to the everyday activities of the surrounding community.
By coming together to clean and maintain the area, local residents, volunteers, and participating organizations contributed to keeping a shared public space clean and welcoming, while strengthening a sense of collective responsibility for the environment in the community.
254.5 kg of Waste Collected and Sent for Proper Treatment
Following the cleanup, 254.5 kg of waste was collected from areas around Phu Dien Lake, the Phu Dien Martyrs’ Memorial, and the Memorial Site of President Ho Chi Minh’s Visit to Kieu Mai.
The collected waste was then transported to designated treatment facilities in accordance with regulations.
While the figure of 254.5 kg represents the tangible result of a morning of collective action, the impact of the activity goes beyond the amount of waste collected. Each piece of waste removed from a public space also offers an opportunity to reflect on how waste enters our surroundings and consider the everyday habits that each of us can change.
Keeping shared spaces clean cannot rely solely on periodic cleanup activities. Long-term environmental improvements require the participation of multiple stakeholders, from local authorities, social organizations, and businesses to volunteers and individual community members.
Raising Awareness of Shared Environmental Responsibility
Beyond the cleanup activity, the program also provided an opportunity for local representatives and participants to reflect on the significance of World Cleanup Day and the shared responsibility of protecting the environment we live in.
Speaking at the event, Ms. Hoang Thi Thuy, Permanent Deputy Secretary of the Phu Dien Ward Party Committee, emphasized the importance of strengthening the role and responsibility of the community in protecting and maintaining a healthy living environment.
Ms. Tran Thanh Van, Vice Chairwoman of the Phu Dien Ward Women’s Union, delivered the opening remarks and launched the local response to World Cleanup Day 2026 as part of the “Green – Clean – Beautiful” movement.
During the program, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Tam, Vice Chairwoman of the Phu Dien Ward Women’s Union, highlighted the practical contributions of local organizations and residents in creating a greener, cleaner, and more civilized living environment.
A representative of Women’s Group 9 in Phu Dien also expressed support for the campaign and pledged to continue taking practical environmental actions within the local community.
These contributions underscore that environmental protection is not the responsibility of any single organization or group of volunteers. It requires the continued participation of the wider community, particularly in developing and maintaining everyday habits that are suited to the needs and circumstances of each neighbourhood.

At World Cleanup Day 2026, Ms. Bui Thi Ngoc Diep, Director of Keep Vietnam Clean (KVC), highlighted the role of social enterprises in working alongside local communities and mobilizing resources for environmental initiatives.

Their contribution, together with the participation of local authorities, volunteers, and residents, helped make the activity meaningful and strengthen the spirit of shared responsibility for protecting our living environment.
